Project Description

Perini Management Services led a team to design and construct communication towers and associated equipment at five remote locations within and along the Gulf of Alaska to support the Coast Guard's Rescue 21 communications system. We constructed three new Remote Fixed Facility sites consisting of a communications tower and shelter, SCADA system, Solid Oxide Fuel Cell power plant and propane tank farm at each of the new sites. We also constructed helicopter pads at two of these sites and provided new microwave equipment at two existing sites. The new sites were on remote mountain tops  located within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, Glacier Bay National Park, and the Tongass National Forest. Construction activities were meticulously scheduled to occur during the short ice free summer season. Equipment was barged and met at landing zones by crews who traveled by helicopter or float plane to off-load and transfer the materials and equipment to helicopters for delivery to the sites. Crews lived in tents while construction and final assembly of the project components took place.
